Open Letter to a Delhi Boy (Source Link below)

Source: http://raagshahana.blogspot.com/2011/09/open-letter-to-delhi-boy.html?spref=fb

Loved this letter! Hilarious! Do note that I haven't written this article and neither does it mean that I share the sentiment! Loved the way its written.

OPEN LETTER TO A DELHI BOY

Dear Delhi boy,

Namaskaram from the South of India, or as you may like to believe, the countries south of the Vindhyas. I came to your city 2 years ago with a brand new job and a bucketload of expectations. My friends and family here thought I was completely insane to choose Delhi over more female conducive cities like Bangalore or even Bombay. I am very sad to report that your reputation of being an ignorant, chauvinistic oaf with the intelligence levels of an autistic 3 year old on crack precedes you and it hurts me even more to admit to this rather accurate description.

Your reputation has travelled far and wide, to countries outside South India as well. And believe me man, it is not a pretty situation. I understand that your stone faded, ripped jeans, your V-neck cleavage showing t-shirts that revel to the world that you have infact inherited your mother’s voluptuous shaved Punjabi bosom, are what you think maketh a man, but it does not. It only maketh for a man who gets a pity license to share his girlfriend’s bra. I write to you as a woman who has been brought up in a society free of any discrimination towards women so thanks to you, my living in Delhi is as safe as Hugh Hefner’s playmate of the year living in Jedah.

You meet me at a friend’s birthday, talk to me about nightclubs and your new SUV and when I look like I’m in desperate need of a barf bag, you think I have an attitude problem. I understand this completely. But let me remind you that I am from SOUTH INDIA and not SOUTH DELHI, so no ,I am not scrawny, I am not fair, I don’t have straight hair and my topics of conversation go beyond the Fendi I saw in last month’s Vogue. I am olive-skinned, have lower –back-length lustrous cascading tresses that sometimes make me look like I fell out Jim Morrison’s tour bus. Got a problem with that? Well just suck it up coz I was born into a society where a woman can whoop your Punjabi patoutie to pulp. While your mother pretends to be very progressive but still cows down to the whims of her husband every single time, mine on the other hand was born into a matriarchal home where every single possession is in the rightful name of the girl child. Could you ever, my hunky handsome, cash throwing pig, imagine this kind of power in your society? So stop telling me that women are not treated like trash where you come from. Just shut up and admit to it. It’s just easier that way. And lest we forget that we’ve managed to curtail the number of rape cases despite not having a female Chief Minister. Amma ‘s body composition generates way too much heat for her get out of her AC room anyway, so don’t even bring that up.

And your English. Good Lord, what in the world is up with that? I don’t want you to ‘explain me’ anything. It’s like you need to go to primary school all over again. And call them your parents, not your ‘peerents’ or what your cooler, more happening brethren call them—‘mere mom-dad’. Like what are they? Conjoined twins? Are they joined at the hip? Your South India counterparts may not have your looks, but are way more mentally stimulating, a quality that alludes you obviously, but has been the single most sexy factor for us Southie chicks since the age of five. I mean once again, who can blame you? You were brought up on Gurdas Mann and the heroic deeds of Devinder Singh Bhullar and the ever so fair concepts such as elections in Phugwada while we mere ‘black-colour waale’ mortals had to make do with Bharatnatyam classes, M.S subhalakshmi and chess. Shame no? And yes, if by a slight chance, you do find my big dancer eyes attractive enough for you to prolong our conversations and meetings and if by an even slighter chance you fall in love with me and decide to marry me, you will have to wear a mundu and you will have to lie prostrate shirtless at the Guruvayurappan temple. A small price to pay for all the genuine independence I am giving up for you. And that’s the real thing, not what you see the Delhi girls at LSR and Stephen’s doing during their fake as hell protest marches coz ultimately they’re going home to a family who’re putting together money for Bobby beta’s bail coz he just ran over his girlfriend’s ex, by mistake of course.

I understand that I come from the land of ugly. I mean obviously Hema Malini, Sri Devi and Aishwarya Rai with their natural banal looks don’t even hold a candle to Priyanka Chopra after her two nose jobs and one lip reconstruction surgery. Not a chance in hell. But when you do come to ask for my hand, remember I am part Maharashtrian and part South Indian and NO, they are not the same thing. So please tell your family, not to drop racist bombs like “Arey woh sab toh ‘Sawth’ ke hi hote hai na?” And YOU—don’t walk up to mother in an attempt to make flattering conversation and say shit like “Aunty you don’t look like a South Indian You are so fair” In return she will verbally Texas chainsaw massacre your face so badly, your dead Dadi will haunt you the very same night, telling you how fleeing Pakistan was less traumatic. So don’t. Better still just don’t speak. Just glean and flex your muscles a little and keep smiling. Just whatever you do, don’t talk.

You may not like our food, but then we don’t like you, which is worse. We may not be even that into food, but then that’s coz we have other things to do with our lives, like crack IIT or become writers, journalists, activists and do things that we are very passionate about. The South Indian woman has a voice and boy can she yell. So if you want to Sambhar ‘Chawl’ your way into my life, then you got to toe the line. Be way more aware than what your are. Remember Delhi is not a country and we are not Black. If I ever hear you utter that name of that colour, I will Kalaripayattu your tongue out of your rear. Yes , that is the secret behind our awesome sex ratio. Just so you know.

For someone who is so confident of his physical abilities you really suck at luring an intelligent woman. Don’t send me text messages that say ‘happy guru purab’, you freakshow and if you want to be cute with your ever so charming (not) Punjabi advances, then don’t send texts that say “Dil laye gayee kudi Madrraaas di”! NO. It’s just not cool man. I may have have missed on a lot in this letter, but that’s ok because you’ll forget to read it and even if you do , you’ll get your cousin Jassi from Defence Callonny to translate it for you. And this letter can’t go on forever like the Punjabi male ego.
So long my love, and here’s two steps of gidda just for you, just to show that I can be traditional and will not accidently kick your sister while doing so.

Love, hugs, kisses aka ‘muah’ (only I shall ‘muah’, you please don’t do anything coz you tend to forget that these are my lips and not a piece of Tandoori Chicken from Kakke- Da- Dhabba)

Yours
Madrasan
(Only I can call myself that. If you EVER call me by this name, I will shove so many coconuts down your system that your little saver pack versions will begin to sprout coir.)

Why would you copy the entire article over to your blog? Can't a link and perhaps a quote suffice?

Google now shows your page instead of the content's rightful owner.

Piss off Madrasa!

This letter of yours reeks of generalisation, just as your hair reeks of jasmine/coconut oil.

Let me point out that having lived both in South India and North, I find you South Indians very petty and ignorant. Even though I am not from the North, often I was on the receiving end of discrimination as the buffoons down south consider any place above Karnataka as North India. I have faced no such thing in Delhi.

You need to realise that all Delhi boys are not the same. Also, so much hatred for your fellow countrymen is very unbecoming of anyone. So you should not proudly call yourself a South Indian, in fact Indians like you give us a bad name.

So, very politely, please hang or drown yourself!

Divyanka said...

Beautiful...!!! And aarman, I'm sure you are from Delhi and when you can learn to say a sentence without the word "fuck" we"ll talk... As for those who think that this article is extreme, try being an intelligent human being living in the north, you will think you are superior because when you are introduced to a new person who is a delhite.. And they ask you where you live, or what car you drive, or how much money you make, or have the guys stare at you undressing you in their minds.. It's despicable and sad.. Those of you who feel that we are all Indians.. I agree.. But tell them to take the " all Indians are my brothers and sisters" seriously
and we madrasees as you put it, because ofcourse maps are not available in Delhi even with their 90 percent cut off
rates in universities, will forgive and forget..
As for the person who wrote piss off madrasees.. And has lived in the north and the south... You are north Indian and a man.. I don't blame you.. Plus we are sweet but not push overs.. Soo you started the war... Deal with it..besides don't bother calling yourself a true Indian unless you are Dravidian.. In our heads, you took advantage of our hospitality and then have the gumption to insult us... Where are your manners??? Ooppppsss sorry I forgot, you have none...
Again we can forgive and forget, have you learnt even the meaning of those words??!!
Again beautifully put..

Divyanka said...

And the person who thinks that the beautiful soul who wrote these words and who has a voice, needs to lose her virginity because that's the cause for her frustration... I have a few questions.. Is sex the way your mother deals with her frustration?? Maybe that's why you think that's a solution..or is that how you treat your girlfriend/ wife... Show her in bed where her place is??or is that how your father taught you to treat women ?? You poor pathetic soul..

I do agree that everything is not good with Delhi. Then again, we do not live in an eutopian world. I moved to this city about a decade ago and I am yet to come across (personally) people who are rude; arrogant; rapist or maniacs.

Every city, to be specific metropolitan, across the globe comes with its share of baggage. I am not going to get into an argument of Delhi vs Madras or for that matter any other city. As an Indian, I should feel safe and welcoming in every village, town and city of this land. But a lot depends on myself - how I adjust to the social norms of the place I am living in and how I behave with my neighbours. If the world is my enemy, then I should look inwards and find where the fault lies.

You did mention about Delhi-ites and food. I have a feeling that you have not really mixed around with the right set of people. If you visited Sagar, Swagath, Gunpowder, Naivedyam; Sarvana Bhavan, Andhra Bhavan etc, you would have come across people who love south indian cuisine and mind you, most of them eating there are not from the "South of Vindhyas"

Your statement ‎"intelligence levels of an autistic 3 year old on crack" reveals a rather inhuman state of your mind. A totally unwarranted statement, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I just found it a bit "regionally racist" or maybe one of you can suggest a better English word for it!!! I mean in my opinion all guys are ass holes to some or the other extent!!! I know a lot of "South Indian" guys who are similar to the "North Indian" guys she talks about!!! :) She is just doing what girls are good at, bitching!!! Like I am doing right now in this very comment!!! Its human nature, deal with it!!! And Divyanka you and some of the others here remind me of those religious extremists, but only in this case its regional extremism!!!

P.S: I am a girl. My mom is "South Indian" Madrasee and my dad is "North Indian" Punjabi, I am just Indian!!!

Jay Rambhia said...

I know it's a liberal country and you can say whatever you want. But this letter just shows that you are a pissed off Delhite. No offense!
But this letter does not reflect the cultures of South India. What's the difference between you and Delhi guy!? They are racists and so are you!
Instead of pointing out the negative qualities of Delhi people, you could have referred to the positive attitude of south Indians.
Anyway, nicely compelled!

Satyantam, I agree that all Indians should be welcomed all over india.. But I don't think anyone should feel ashamed about the way they feel, and if she felt a certain way, who are you to tell her to be ashamed of herself?? And all the places you have mentioned, I have personally been to, but it doesn't change their attitude now, does it??
And I'm sure you haven't met any rapists and everyone has been very welcoming to you.. Let me guess... You live in south Delhi, you speak relatively good English, you are somewhat wealthy, and for a guy to rape you now would just be pointless....
The problem is that you say we should be welcomed anywhere in india and for the most part we are.. Bbay is the best example.. But god forbid " a woman" should voice her opinion... She should be ashamed?? Sod off....

Divyanka said...

Regional extremist... I agree with you.. We are... And news flash I'm half south Indian and half north Indian too.. But why should be the question.. What went wrong... Sure most guys are horrible.. But if you read the article again.. That's not all she talks about..

Divyanka said...

Jay you are right... But some people understand their own language.. So if a few of us have to be thrown in the mud to make them understand.. So be it..and being positive is one thing.. Being a rug/ mat for them is another...

well this letter is funny but certainly very wrong..
because of some personal bad experiences you can't judge everyone on the same lines.
also even if you do call the punjabi stupid they are the most successful businessmen all over the world it doesnt matter how they got there but they are good at that in countries like england even with their limited english as the girl in the letter mentioned..
another thing she says is south indians are discriminated in north india which is a lie..
go to south india and there is so many people who can speak hindi but they dont want to which feels quite bad but then again i never complained..
i am from the best part of india which is goa and the women here are hot and safe and the men cool as hell haha but look up on the internet..
most of the universities in the USA and the targets are south indian students..
so if everyone is being mean to you one has to wonder if everyone in the world is crazy or somethign is wrong with your own attitude..
live in peace be happy and you will be respected as borthers and sisters
shoving coconuts up the punjabis ass haha i wonder how the punjabi boy will retaliate coz obviously they are bigger and stronger...

nik siwach said...

to divide the country is the last thing we need right now

The lady here says she hates the guy for: being pompous and so full of himself and being disdainful of other cultures.

She is being exactly like the person she hates. Obviously, her hatred for Delhi emanates from a frivolous matter i.e rejection by a north Indian. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned... and all that.

Making fun of the partition was in real bad taste. I don't think she could have done that in her right mind... if she knew what Partition was like. But how could she know.

The culture down south could progress and evolve very well, partly because meanwhile the Punjabis were fighting the invaders and keeping them out of India. It's futile to expect a peeved, ignorant girl to understand it.

And what's this thing about the IIT? It's really no big deal. Don't say it's your monopoly. It's just that there are different traditions in different cultures. South Indians crack IIT more and Punjabis sacrifice their lives for their country more.

Anyone with a lot of time on their hands can crack IIT.

Well written and true to some extent. However, I have met a handful of intellectual ling stimulating Punjabi men and they aren't like this. Btw, my maid is a south Indian and she gets beaten up by her husband and her kids on a daily basis. The point I am trying to make is that MCP mentality exists everywhere. Depends on the upbringing and not regional influences.

being a bong .. (:D) I can say one thing I don't like Delhi ..Infact I hate Delhi .But what you said is generalization.. and Delhi is not north India .. I have been to south india and north india .. I don't doubt that south indian's are more helpful .any body who did not receive their help I can say only one thing "Ask for it in english not in hindi stupid " .We just have different measurements of life .. The value of education is not same in north and south india .. but you should also remember that the guys who fought for our freedom many of them were punjabis.. I know many of the North Indian's are ignorant .. but again north india produces best businessman ...we need both .. about choice of girl as a bong I can say I ofcourse want a bong girl.. becasue I think my mind set will match with a bong girl.. so whats wrong in a punjabi wanting a punjabi kudi ... ?
gievn a chance I won't marry a south indian because they are too conservative..and not a north indian because mentally they are conservative also ( Yep wearing bikinis has nothing to do with Conservative for me) ..And the same way I know my mentality while is a turn on for a bong girl .. a turn down for south indians and north indians it is the culture dudette ... All I will ask is noth Indians to respect others .. (most of the cases they don't ) and south indians to stop hatred and bongs to do some work :D

Besides the dream of most south indians is to get a ticket to the US and then curse the bloody Indians from there. And Hindi is your most hated language, even if you know it you will not use it in a conversation with a north Indian because Hindi is not "our" national language it's just an official language .. you fucking pretentious inferior assholes..

I ahve a bank account in Karnatka Bank and I found all employees are south Indians and they talk very badly with us....they never talk in good way. But this doesnt mean I will develop a feeling of hatred for whole south india...I am not supporting any one here not even who has written this article. You know Guys if we are going to develop such feeling the day is not far when again someone will rule upon us ....so leave this north south east and west and come with a feeling of INDIAN....

First of all, I’m sorry about the fact that despite your desperate attempts to make Delhi-ites hate your kind, I still love South Indians.
So Miss Southie, at least women here are allowed to nightclubs and not shoved out of them by some moral brigade trying to supposedly ‘save our culture’.
So you want to be accepted for your self-degrading description of what I would have otherwise called beautiful, but cannot accept a man with a single physical flaw. Do I see hypocrisy here?
So how old are you? 5? Anyone can call their parents whatever they like till the time they’re given due respect.
And why do you seem so apologetic about the looks you possess? Because what looks like a desperate attempt at being a ‘dark and proud people’, you come across as someone with a deeply embedded inferiority complex. Seriously, be proud of the way you are. And I mean genuinely.
Just because Bharatnatyam started somewhere near where you live does not mean you’re the only ones who possess it, North India is flooded with people and institutes which teach Bharatnatyam. To top that we even have a wide variety of other dance forms to choose from. And as for chess… we just choose to lie low and channelize our energies into lesser sports like… well hello? Those are all sports nonetheless, it doesn’t matter!
You are a tad confused lady. Despite this whole supposedly witty and totally-not-exaggerated rant about the men of my kind, you still seem to have have hopes of marrying them?
And here's where I get vicious honey. I cannot help it if you were too busy trying your ass off to get into IIT and in the bargain did not even get accepted in some of the MOST prestigious colleges in the country where most people would give up a limb to get into. ‘Sour grapes’ is the best way I can describe this. At least the Delhi girls from LSR handle a bad break-up in a more dignified way than this. Oh and if not IIT you could probably try nursing school, you’d blend right in. (Yeah how's that for a stereotype? That's how it feels).
Natural looks? I really pity your ignorance sweety but from a girl who is supposedly proud of her ‘South-Indian dark complexion’ it’s strange that every actress you have mentioned here is fairer than the other, plus NO ONE, and I mean no one can ever look the way they do at their age without any correction at all.
Wow! You know if you just wanted to get married to a guy from Delhi so desperately, why didn’t you just say so instead of dropping subtle hints in a post where you’re simply trying to play hard to get? You could just talk to your family you know, they might just understand that you want to be with someone NON-South Indian. And of course since you invested so much of your precious time trying to crack IIT, I don’t blame you for lacking basic language skills, but let me tell you honey, there is a difference between being witty and being plain rude.
For your hatred towards food, I’d say, try spicing things up a little bit. And some sweet should do you good. At least it’ll make you a little less bitter. At least we could hope so. And as for South Indian food, there might just be more South Indian restaurants in Delhi than any other part of the country and they’re mostly located in the Punjabi dominated areas of Delhi because Punjabis love nothing more than a family of ten and some Rawa Masala Dosas.
Yes Delhi isn’t a country. But it sure is more inclusive than any other part of the country and yeah, Delhi is NOT in Punjab. Please get your facts right.
As for the ‘muah’… do try some passionate kissing sometime. It’ll soften you up and lessen the frustration.
Yours truly,

as much as i admire your style of writing... honestly i feel you need a lot more insight... the article is bound to nothing but generalization and a typical arm chair thinking nut-cases opinion...your anger and frustration is far beyond apparent and could have obviously been put across in a far compelling argument... which obviously you chose over look...if you claim to be the intellectual that you are ahem ... advice behave like one... please do not demean the intellectuals of the south and in short - GET SMART... cheers

dear madrasan, (if u can call urself that, then why cant everone else) ur arrogance is shocking therefore extremely ugly to me. you talk like u've grown up in delhi, met every guy here and thereafter concluded that delhi men are full of hot air.. so let me put it simply..
delhi is a melting pot. sure there are the occasional delhi boys with flashy cars and cleavages and all the innane things that make sense to them.. but there are also the other kind of men. men who dont judge you by the length of ur hair or ur eyes or whatever else you think is so desirable about you. they look past ur silly facade and just like men in the south they'd like a conversation. delhi men dont care about your cracking the da vinci code because they realise very early on that there is more to life than science and maths or whatever else there is that turns you on... and im sure writing this article made you feel like your opinion might matter.. but say all of this to a dilli walas face and id like to see how long ur madrasan ass will be able to withstand what follows.. and hey, there are people like me who give a crap about fendi purses and that isnt necessarily a bad thing, it dusnt mean that i am stupid or that i dont like my man without his shiny toys. people who care about shiny things arnt always vain, my goodness what have they been teaching you in school.. inner beauty is great and all that but i cant see any in ur article anyway so what the hell are you so one-up about? and just for the record, im sure u have long list chemical codes to recite on every date that you go on.. but delhi boys like people everywhere else withold the freakshow until after the marraige.. and i have frens from all over india madras included and none of them use the crass lingo that you did to prove a point, oh im sorry, A BIAS!!! so speak for urself girl.. one last question... HOW OLD ARE YOU ANYWAY?

hard feelings? hell yeah!!
up ur's.

British glorified Religion to divide our country now we Indians glorify regionalism to further tear it apart. I'm pretty sure it would go down in our history text books few years down the lane. Shame!
